Thanks to increased maturity and reliability, ultra-short pulsing (USP) lasers are rapidly penetrating the market, producing more and more quality components. We can find, for example, fs laser systems operating in automated productions like those produced by LASEA.
Also, different market analyses show that this will continue like this in the next years. We know as well that most future industrial applications of USP lasers require high processing quality, but also higher throughput and productivity, for example thanks to higher average powers. At present, several research projects in the EU’s Horizon 2020 program will demonstrate the advantages of using an average power above the KW range, such as MULTIPOINT.
The main objective of the MULTIPOINT project is to develop a high-power fs laser system for high throughput micro-drilling of large titanium panels used in the fabrication Hybrid Laminar Flow Control (HLFC) structures in the aerospace industry. But the laser alone does not guarantee superior results if all other elements of the laser system are not properly selected and managed. For example, at high average powers, the residual thermal effects become significant and can degrade the quality of processing and optical components, posing specific new challenges. Therefore, new treatment strategies must be applied based on laser application and specifications: laser beam shaping, high-speed scanning, parallel processing, or a combination thereof. And it is in these types of activities where LASEA makes its main and key contribution.
LASEA is one of the most established suppliers of USP laser systems on the market. This broad experience is what allows LASEA to play a key role in the MULTIPOINT project, integrating key components for the final application. LASEA also plays a key role from the point of view of the exploitation of the project results in the same area of the project, aeronautics, as in other areas that may need to perform numerous high-quality drilling at a very high rate, such as the renewable energy sector.
